1. Create a space in your home. The amount of space will determine the number and size of object d'art you can accommodate.
2. Decide on your medium. Do you want photographs, sketches, sculptures, etc? This, in part, will be determined by the amount of space you dedicate to your collection.
3. You need to create a budget and stick to it. It is best not become art poor by making your art the most important aspect of your life. Remember you must eat too.
4. Learn about the art you are collecting. Check out websites and books to help you make informed decisions.
Also, look at the possibilities of taking art appreciation classes. You can take them at local colleges, universities, community college or from art guilds or societies.
5. Attend art shows in your area. You may find that you are more interested in a local artist than the Great Masters.
6. When you are making decisions on buying make sure to use a reputable dealer or auction house. Develop friendships with dealers and those that acquire for auctions houses. They will know what you like. In addition, they can possibly give you a heads up when something comes in that you would be of interest to you.
7. Do not rule out the possibility of making a great find at second hand stores, garage and estate sales. You may be able to find a great deal. Occasionally you will see a news spot where someone has found something of great value at such sales.
8. Beware of scams.
• People planted in auctions with the purpose of running up the bidding to inflate the prices
• Dealers who don't have clear title to what they are selling
• Posters sold as original prints
• And, the frauds that have been around forever such as forgeries and faked signatures
• The newest is someone contacts you offering a price for your artwork. If you accept, they offer to send you a check for an amount over the agreed upon price. The next step is for you to send/wire them the difference. You are out your art and your money.
9. Buy what you like not the art dujour. If collecting pigs and cows makes you happy, collect pigs and cows.
10. Have fun. Collecting art should not be a chore.
